The 2025 results of the European Ranking of Engineering Programmes (EngiRank)—one of Europe’s most prestigious engineering ranking systems—have been announced. Turkish universities, evaluated for the first time this year, made a strong entrance onto the European stage.
Istanbul Technical University (ITU), ranking 60th, and Middle East Technical University (METU), ranking 99th, secured their places among the top 100 engineering schools in Europe. In total, 16 Turkish universities succeeded in entering the ranking.
EngiRank, supported by the European Commission and designed specifically to evaluate engineering and technology programs, assessed 300 higher education institutions from 36 countries within the European Higher Education Area. With their performance this year, Turkish universities have demonstrated the international quality of their engineering education.
In addition to ITU and METU being placed in the top 100, Boğaziçi University and Sabancı University shared the 108th position. Yıldız Technical University ranked 130th, Bilkent University 139th, and Kocaeli University 173rd. Gazi University, İzmir Institute of Technology, and Karabük University placed 179th, while Gebze Technical University and Sakarya University ranked 189th, and Karadeniz Technical University entered the top 200 at 198th place. Fırat University ranked 203rd, Düzce University 216th, and Manisa Celal Bayar University secured the 226th position.
Unlike traditional university rankings, EngiRank employs a multidimensional methodology tailored to Europe. In addition to academic publications and citations, key criteria include participation in European Research Council projects, Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe activities, engineering accreditations, patent output, industry partnerships, and contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Özvar: “The global competition in science and technology has intensified”
President of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE) Erol Özvar emphasized the growing global competition in science and technology, stating, “We continue our efforts with the vision of making Turkish higher education competitive, inclusive, and high-quality at the global level.”
Özvar added that the positive outcomes of CoHE’s initiatives are increasingly reflected in international rankings, and expressed confidence that Turkish universities will rise even further in the coming years as the ongoing transformation continues.
